Pre-purchase inspection.

Buying used? Get a real inspection before you sign. We check 80+ items, document with photos, and give you a written report — the kind of report that pays for itself the first time it surfaces a problem the seller didn’t disclose.

In short: A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) at Auto Trends is a 60–90 minute deep look at any used vehicle you’re considering. We check engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, electrical, body, frame, fluids, tires, and platform-specific known issues. Written report with photos delivered same day. Best money you’ll spend before buying used.
Common Symptoms

What we check.

If your vehicle is showing any of these, bring it in. Most are addressable; all deserve real diagnosis before parts are thrown at the problem.

Our Process

Don’t buy a used car without one.

The math on a pre-purchase inspection is simple. The cost is a flat fee. The savings — if we catch one significant issue you didn’t know about — can be thousands.

Here’s what’s covered: 80+ check items, hands-on inspection by an experienced tech, scan for stored codes (including codes the seller may have cleared), test drive for shift and braking quality, lift inspection for underbody/frame condition, and a written report with photos delivered to your phone the same day.

For specialty vehicles — diesel trucks, European cars, lifted Jeeps, classic cars — we add platform-specific checks. A 6.0 Power Stroke gets an EGR cooler and oil cooler check. A BMW gets a cooling system pressure test. A Subaru gets a head gasket inspection. We tell you what we found, what’s likely to fail next, and what’s solid.

Most PPIs take 60–90 minutes. We can usually accommodate within 24–48 hours of your booking. Bring the seller’s documentation (service records, title) if you have them.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost?

Flat-fee pricing, scaled to vehicle complexity. A typical PPI on a sedan or SUV is $179. Diesel trucks, European cars, and complex specialty vehicles are $229–$329. We provide the price up front when you book.

How long does a PPI take?

60–90 minutes for most vehicles. Diesel trucks and European cars often take 90–120 minutes due to platform-specific checks. We give you the report the same day, usually within an hour of completing the inspection.

Will you tell me if I should buy the car?

We won’t tell you yes or no — that’s your call. What we do is give you the facts: what’s wrong, what’s likely to go wrong soon, what’s been repaired before, and what the cost of the issues we found would be to address. Armed with that information, you can decide whether to walk away, negotiate the price down, or buy as-is.

Can you inspect a vehicle that’s not in Fort Collins?

Within reasonable driving distance — yes. The seller or their agent has to bring the vehicle to us. We don’t currently offer mobile PPI service. If the vehicle is too far for the seller to bring in, we recommend finding a reputable independent shop near the vehicle and asking them to do a similar comprehensive inspection.
